In response to Donald Trump once again refusing to say whether he would accept the results of the 2020 election, Stand Up America Founder and President Sean Eldridge issued the following statement on behalf of Protect The Results:
“Throughout American history, presidents who have lost re-election have always stepped down willingly and respected the peaceful transition of power. Donald Trump’s refusal to commit to accepting the results of the upcoming election shows that he is an existential threat to our democracy and has no respect for the rule of law.
“For five years, Trump has sought to undermine our elections again and again—from soliciting foreign interference to making baseless claims about voter fraud to lying about the results of the 2016 election. Trump’s comments are an escalation in these attacks on our democracy and show the insidious ways in which Trump is working to sow doubt about the outcome of this election before votes are even cast.
“The American people must be prepared to mobilize if Trump refuses to concede—and we will be prepared to meet the moment if he does.”
As Axios reported, “President Trump refused to say on ‘Fox News Sunday’ whether he would accept the results of November’s election if he loses to Joe Biden, telling host Chris Wallace: ‘I have to see. I’m not just going to say yes. I’m not going to say no.’”
Last month, Stand Up America launched Protect the Results, a joint effort with Indivisible seeking to protect the valid results of the 2020 election. The new project aims to build a network of millions of Americans who pledge to take action should Trump refuse to accept the results or if he attempts to declare victory while the actual outcome remains unclear.
